Admissions to Year 7 in September 2008

If you wish to apply for a place in Year 7, you must complete and return two applications forms:

If you miss the October deadline, you may still submit an application and it will be considered. However, if places have already been assigned it is unlikely you will be offered a place, though, if the application is strong enough, you may be offered a place on the waiting list.

You will be informed of the outcome of your application by your local Borough on Wednesday 5th March 2008.

If you have any difficulty in obtaining the Common Application Form or have any questions about applications we will be pleased to help. Please contact the Registrar.

For admissions to Year 7 in September 2008, there are 196 places.

Transfer from Year 7 at another School

If your son is already in Year 7 and you wish him to transfer to Wimbledon College, you should apply for a place as set out below for Years 8-11. It is, however, very unlikely that any places will be available during Year 7.

Admissions to Years 8, 9, 10 and 11

Applications for Years 8 to 11 are handled by Wimbledon College. You should apply on the Wimbledon College Application Form.

Applications may be made at any time according to circumstances. If you are applying for entry next September, we should receive your application by the end of June.

The criteria of the Admissions Policy apply.

Admissions to Sixth Form

Admissions to the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) are considered on the basis of a boy’s achievements at GCSE and the availability of suitable courses in the Sixth Form. The Sixth Form is jointly run with the Ursuline High School, Wimbledon.

The criteria of the Admissions Policy apply.

Further information on Sixth Form courses is available on request from the Registrar. You can download the Sixth Form Application Form here.

If your Application is Refused

If you are not offered a place for your son, it will be because the school is full. All of the available places will have been taken by children with a stronger application according to the criteria of the Admissions Policy. Wimbledon College is greatly oversubscribed and, clearly, there is a limit to the numbers of pupils we can accommodate in our buildings.

You may appeal against the decision of the Governors.

The appeal is heard by an independent panel, the members of which are not associated with Wimbledon College. The appeal is arranged by the Clerk to the Governors to whom you should write within 15 days of receiving the letter of refusal. You will be sent further information on the appeals procedure.

The Waiting List

You may be offered a place on the waiting list. You must formally accept that offer in writing for your son to be placed in the list.

If another child does not take up a place, your son will be offered the place. The waiting list is ranked by strength of the application according to the criteria of the Admissions Policy.

The waiting list is discontinued on 31st August. This is so that the backlog is cleared of pupils who have found other schools and no longer wish to pursue their application to Wimbledon College.

A new waiting list is begun on 1st September. If your son was on the old waiting list and you wish his name to be included on the new waiting list, you must inform the Registrar towards the end of August.

Wimbledon College maintains an online version of the waiting list where parents on applicants can see their son's current position on the waiting list from day to day.

Appeals

If you have applied for a place for your son at Wimbledon College and have not been offered a place, you have the statutory right of appeal.

You should consider carefully the reasons given for not offering your son a place and also look at the school’s Admissions Policy.

An appeal is made to an independent admission appeal panel.

If you wish to appeal, you should write to The Registrar, c/o Wimbledon College, Edge Hill, London SW19 4NS, within 15 school days of receipt of the letter telling you your son is not being offered a place. Your letter must state your grounds for appeal. The Clerk is not involved in the appeal but will pass on details of your appeal to the independent panel.

Appeal requests which arrive outside the 15 day period will not be considered.

You will then be given 15 days notice of the appeal hearing date.

This panel is made up of three people who are not involved with Wimbledon College.

You may be accompanied to the appeal hearing by a friend or representative who will help you state your case. The panel in their turn will do all they can to provide you with the time and assistance needed to present your case fully.

At the appeal hearing, a senior member of Wimbledon College staff or a Governor will explain why the school has not offered your son a place. You may then ask him/her questions as will the panel. You will then be asked to state your case. You may then be asked questions. Each party then sums up its position and leaves while the panel considers its decision. The appeal panel will inform you of its decision.
