Art and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity.  

Lower Line

Art and design at key stage 3 level aims to equip students with the technical foundations to realise their creative expression.  Students will study art from different cultures, such as Aboriginal art, as well as in a wide variety of forms, from typography to African masks.

  • Employing Aboriginal painting techniques to create original, independent art work.

Rudiments Rotation 1 

Human Form

  • Learning about how the human form has been portrayed in art.
  • Learning about the artist Alberto Giacometti and the Futurist art movement.
  • Learning about sculpture.
  • Learning how to work in three dimensions with wire, foil and mod-roc.

Rudiments Rotation 2 

Colour and Kandinsky

  • Exploring colour and how it is used in art.
  • Learning how to manage and use paint properly.
  • Understanding abstract art.
  • Learning about the artist Wassily Kandinsky.

Lower Grammar Rotation 1 

Pop Art

  • Learning about the Pop Art movement and the artists Andy Warhol and  Roy Lichtenstein.
  • Understanding how to gather and present research.
  • Extending painting skills and techniques.
  • Discovering how Ben-Day Dots are used in printing.
  • Learning how to create paper cuts.

Higher Line

GCSE Art provides you with a wide range of creative and stimulating opportunities to explore your interests in new and exciting ways. You will learn how to look at the things that inspire you, collect and present research, explore the work of artists and designers and develop your own ideas with a variety of materials and techniques including drawing, painting, collage, printing, sculpture and IT.

Externally Set Assignment

  • Working on an externally set theme pupils will-
  • Research a suitable artist and analyse the artist's work.
  • Collect relevant research appropriate to the theme
  • Develop this research towards a final piece, reviewing and refining their work as it progresses.

Syntax Term 3 

Externally Set Assignment

  • Working on an externally set theme pupils will-
  • Create a successful final piece during the final 10 hour exam.

Sixth Form

The A level Art and Design Course is an exciting and creative course that ensures the practical skill development of drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and design.  The course provides students with opportunities to develop personal responses to ideas, observations, experiences, environments and cultures in practical, critical and contextual forms.

  • Understanding the importance of an artist's preoccupations to be able to successfully analyse and respond to their work.
  • Developing work independently, experimenting with a variety of materials and processes, towards a final piece, reviewing and refining their work as it progresses.

Poetry Term 3 

Personal Investigation- Written

  • Through writing a 1000-1500 word essay on a personally chosen area of Art pupils will-
  • Gain a deeper understanding of an aspect(s) of the Art world and be able to contextualise their work.
  • Learn how to analyse artists and works of art in a meaningful way

  • Using insight gained in the written element of the Personal Study, further developing research skills.
