Poetry by Heart 2017
We are delighted to announce the winners of the Wimbledon College
Poetry by Heart 2017 World War One recital competition.
Hearty congratulations to them both:
Adam Benlounes (Rudiments) won the KS3 competition with a very engaging performance
of 'There Will Come Soft Rains' by Sara Teasdale.
Harry Humphries (Lower Grammar) won the KS4 competition with a stirring and poignant
telling of 'The Stretcher Bearer' by Tommy Crawford.
This competition required pupils to select, learn and perform by heart a World War One poem.
The English department was delighted to have over a hundred boys perform various poems. From this number,
a shortlist of around twenty pupils was invited to perform before a panel of teachers.
As ever in these sort of competitions, the overall quality of performance was exceptional, and testament
to the effort and application of the pupils. We hope this will be the first in a series of recital activities.
The two winners, Adam and Harry, now go forward to the national Poetry by Heart contest.
