Photography combines creative expression with a technical edge.

Students of Photography A level will study various form of photography, including still life, portraiture and landscape.  Students will learn to appreciate the importance of light, texture, line, colour and form.

Technical knowledge will include the three parameters of exposure (ISO, shutter speed, and aperture) and how these can be manipulated to achieve different photographic effects.

Portfolio- Identity

  • Exploring ways of representing yourself using photographic techniques.
  • Introduction to a range of photographic media, techniques and processes including forced perspective, destroying an image and photo montage.
  • Understanding the importance of an artist’s preoccupations and how to respond in their work through research and analysis of the work of Gilbert and George.
Learning how work is assessed using the AQA GCE Assessment Objectives.

Portfolio- Transformation

Using techniques learnt in the Identity project-

  • Learning how to collect relevant research.
  • Understanding the importance of an artist's preoccupations to be able to successfully analyse and respond to their work.
  • Developing work independently, experimenting with a variety of materials and processes, towards a final piece, reviewing and refining their work as it progresses.
  • Creating a successful final piece(s)

Poetry Term 3 

Personal Study- Written

  • Through writing a 1000-1500 word essay on a personally chosen area of Art & Design pupils will-
  • Gain a deeper understanding of an aspect(s) of the Art & Design world and be able to contextualise their work.
  • Learn how to analyse artists and works of art/design in a meaningful way.

  • Using insight gained in the written element of the Personal Study, further developing research skills.

Working on an externally set theme pupils will-

  • Research a suitable artist and analyse the artist/photographer’s work.
  • Collect relevant research appropriate to the theme
  • Develop this research towards a final piece, reviewing and refining their work as it progresses
